QR Codes: School Time Owl Vocabulary {NEW Activity}

QR Codes are definitely the latest craze to hit the SLP and education world!  Have you started using them yet in your speech room?  I recently started using them with various activities and I have to say, my students and I LOVE them!  It's such a fun way to work on so many different goals and objectives all while incorporating technology.

QR Codes are those little black and white bar codes that you have probably seen everywhere from magazine covers to cereal boxes.  In order to use them you need an app (Apple and Droid both have versions).  Personally, I use the "Scan" app on my iPad and iPhone.

As an extra bonus, this activity is also common core aligned!!
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 2 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning word and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.4.4a Use context (e.g., definitions, examples, or restatements in text) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.

Included in this packet are 60 QR Code Task Cards that contain definitions of academic vocabulary words.  There are multiple choice answers on each card.

I have also included a student record form that way students may take their turns and check their answers at the end of the session.  These cards can also be used as part of a "center".

Here is how to play:
Students should take turns choosing cards.  They will read the definition and choose the correct vocabulary word.  Students may check to see if they have chosen the correct answer by scanning the QR code. Students can also record their answers on the included sheet and check at the end of the session (see picture above).

If a QR reader is not available, answers can be checked on the included answer key.  If the answer is correct, he/she collects the card.  The student with the most cards at the end of the session/round, is the winner.
You can head over to my TpT store to grab this activity!  I hope you all enjoy it!  I'd love to hear your thoughts.  You can also enter below via Rafflecopter for a chance to win a copy of this activity!  Two winners will be chosen!!
